Eighty years' ago, as a student looking across my own school garden fence, i saw a forest pitch, government forest reserve, planted with high-class timber trees, "Mahogany" and "Pihimbiya", with a simple log cabin at one end. Little did I guess then, that a few years later, that forest would yield place to magnificent unitary building to house a school, simply called "Govt, Science College", a school unique for the time it was designed to teach only Science subjects and admitting students at the O/L stage to prepare them for the University Entrance Examination.Opened on that fateful day in 1954, unheralded and without fanfare, no one would have thought, this school was destined to achieve great fame and prestige in the years to come......

Mr Ratnasabapathy had an educational philosophy of his own “Teacher should do his best for all the pupils”.He always thought it was his duty by the gifted pupils to bring them to utmost. This he did by providing extra classes. He was so wedded to his work that he did not get married. On one of his visit to Point Pedru, he realized that his parents were old and growing feeble. He left it was his duty to look after them and to get nearer home.
In 1976, Mr Ratnasabapathy came to Hartley College Jaffna. He retired from Hartley College prematurely, under the Government policy of retirement at 55 years of age. He spent his retirement looking after his parents and also helping pupils in the neighborhood in their studies. He passed away in May 1995, of a heart attack, at the age of 82.Accounting to his wish his body was handed over to the Medical Faculty of the University of Jaffna-Yet another mark of his devotion to education.
In memory of this great principle/Teacher , Matale Science College PPA-Colombo Branch-awards seven scholarships to needy students(Four to Science College and Three to Heartly college students) every year who secure admission to the Universities.
